Childhood Trauma in the Believer

It is not an uncommon thing to be a survivor of childhood trauma, but as people of the Lord, we should not be snared by it, yet how many of us are consumed by what happened to us as children, talking of the experiences and feeling the pain of them as if they happened yesterday?

If this is us, we do not realize that we have been set free from the bondage of sin, not only ours but what others have inflicted upon us.  Our past is not who we are any longer, it has no bearing on us whatsoever once we are born into the Kingdom of God.  When we continue to live from our past – as our present, indicates we have not embraced our new identity in Christ.

I once encountered a believer that I would describe sadly as all too typical in my experience.  In this meeting, they would explain their childhood trauma, rejection issues, and loneliness and as I listened, I realized this was a soul still under the law of sin and death!  Interestingly this was not a baby believer but one who teaches the bible and influences many on various platforms.

The person I was engaged with was one with whom I could be frank, so I cut to the heart of the issue and pointed out how the account and explanation came from a self–centric view with no mention, let alone a boast, of who the Lord Jesus Christ is in their life, and then asked, ‘Would you like to hear what the scriptures say?’  She said, ‘No thanks,’ clarifying how she did not ask for my ‘opinion.’

To her and others who are captive to the past childhood trauma they have had to endure, I would say this:

Christ has done everything needed for us so that we may be healed of all that has oppressed us.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,[Is 61:1.

It is up to us to lay to rest and consider our past life – dead.  We will not ever obtain the freedom Jesus proclaims to us until we bury it.

Romans 5, 6, 7 & 8 are excellent guidebooks that walk us through the victory we have in Christ.  This path is not for the faint of heart but for one who is all in. Victory begins when we die, unless we die, Christ cannot live – in us.  When past childhood trauma continues to live – Christ is unable to live and give us victory.

Bring your trauma before the Lord and enter into the school of Christ as you begin reading these chapters.  Ask the Lord for revelation of the truth and power of the gospel He has given to set us free.

Romans 8 summarizes that as believers in Christ whose blood has bought us, we no longer live according to our past lives, our hurts, or let our feelings and emotions rule us, nor do we look to others to soothe our flesh or validate us.  We live by faith – in Christ and join Him in death and Resurrected Life as His Spirit teaches us – what is THE TRUTH as we get this, we can receive deliverance from our past, as the Lord leads us through His Word.

People of God, who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ – we have good news of Christ Jesus our Lord, who has brought us out of the dark and placed us into the light!  Let us not be snared in the past but always look to Him for He is our life and future!

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. Rom 8:1-2.
