What is light? Light in the spiritual context usually means: to reveal what is true. Light otherwise is a positive condition for our well-being and thriving. Light is when we are awake and do most of our living.
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12
This statement Jesus made, tells us that darkness is not good to walk in. We need to understand that there is good and evil. We also need to recognize right and wrong. Only then will we apprehend the truth regarding light and darkness.
What is darkness? Darkness is the absence of God.
Darkness is without light, and indeed without the light of Christ. The Angel of Light operates in darkness. It deceives many who think they are in the light. This includes many who think they follow Jesus Christ. 2 Cor 11:13-15.
Jesus warns us that not all light is of Him:
“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matt 6:22-23
How can we tell if we are walking in the light of Christ? How can we know if it is not the light that is (actually) darkness?
- When our light is dark, we will stumble and not know why. Even worse, we will not care to know why. The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble. Pr 4:19
- We will know what peace is, even though we experience many difficulties, tragedies, and challenges. To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:70 - We will have no secrets from God. We will desire for anything in us that is not of His will to be revealed and healed. For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. Luke 8:17. Ephesians 5:13.
- Until we have the light of Christ we remain dead and blind to what is true. We will not understand the scriptures because they are not ignited – by God’s light.
“Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.” Ephe 5:14
- We are given love (in the context of 1 Cor 13’s definition of love) from God to love His People. He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 1 John 2:9-11
- We become progressively aware of light and dark, right and wrong, flesh and spirit. This understanding comes through the light of Christ in us. In this awareness, we know we must walk (in the light) and it is not optional. 1 Thess 5:4-6, Rom 13:12.
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. 1 Pet 2:9-10
- Darkness produces fruit of its own kind, and are works of the flesh. They may have a look of godliness but will have no power of inner change in our lives. One of the ways that darkness can be exposed in us and what is hidden is through stressful situations and crises. “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. Matt 12:33-35.
We should pay attention to these times in our lives. This helps us to see what is going on in us, through our actions, and what we think and say. Gal 5:19-21, 1 Cor 3:3, James 3:14-18
- Lastly, the Light of Christ always brings us healing. If we still are oozing hurts and they are what shape our thoughts, actions, and attitudes – we remain in darkness.
