We often hear these statements in Christian circles or even say them ourselves.
- God blesses me and is evidence I belong to Him
- Since I love Jesus, He loves me
- I pray to Him, so He hears me
- If a door closes, the Lord will open a window for me!
While these statements are not wrong, there is a danger when we conclude we belong to Christ based on them.
The way we may see what is true is if we should ask ourselves some important questions such as:
Who is the Lord Jesus in my life right now? What has He been teaching me about Himself? What was the last thing I crucified?
Because Jesus Christ lives and is alive, we who belong to Him should have a testimony that declares this because the Holy Spirit is ever working in us through His Word – that we may learn the truth.
As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. John 6:57
There were three churches that Jesus rebuked in Revelation 2 & 3. One had left Jesus who was their first love as they got busy in the affairs of churchianity, and to another, Jesus said they thought they were alive (in Him) but were dead and yet another had felt they had a good vibrant spiritual life in much abundance as they sang and praised the Lord where Jesus had to tell them He was not even yet invited into their lives! We are no better – today!
Our faith is not what we say it is nor is it upon a past encounter. It is based always upon who is Christ right now. Is He alive in us, or dead? Is He sitting outside waiting to be invited in? Or has He been replaced as first love?
