The greatest commandment says ‘Love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength.’ This can only be done by the work and power of the Holy Spirit in us. Areas in our hearts that have not been surrendered hinder us from loving the Lord as He commands. The Lord has given us the promised land, in Christ and the Promised Land IS Christ. As the saints of God, we have a task. We must slay the enemies who occupy our hearts. And give the territory we have gained to Christ. And this involves the help of Lady Wisdom. Lady Wisdom invites us to join her. She has much to show us with the work the Lord desires to do in our hearts.
Wisdom calls aloud outside;
She raises her voice in the open squares.
She cries out in the chief concourses,
At the openings of the gates in the city
She speaks her words: Proverbs 1:20-21
By accepting her invitation, we go in the way of the Lord. When we decline, we follow the way of our flesh and carnal mind, which is not pleasing to the Lord. Romans 8:8.
Jesus has said those with eyes to see will see. Lady Wisdom shows us what we must see. She calls us in the reproofs of life. What is the reproof of life? They are when we face difficult, stressful, and unplanned life events.
A clear example is when we stub our toe. Do we cry out in pain or do we curse? This ‘reproof’ reveals what is in our hearts. Peter’s heart was exposed when Jesus called him to walk on the water. It showed that he trusted in fear more than in the Lord. Matt 14:22-33.
The Lord will reveal to us a great deal if we would have eyes to see it. Often, we will react with fear and this is normal when we are met with crises or conflict. It is what we do with fear that the Lord reveals to us. Usually without thinking we will take orders from what fear tells us.
Listen to her words and the consequences of not choosing her way:
How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit on you, I will make known my words unto you. Because I have called, and you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But you have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof; I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes; When your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you.
When we follow our heart (issues), we will not have the Lord to help us. This is not because He can’t or doesn’t want to. It is because we declined His invitation to join Him. We chose to handle it through our eyes and natural inclination.
When we do not look for Lady Wisdom. We ignore the truth of the situation she presents. We will set out to remedy the fallout through our human understanding and strength. Though the pain we incur leads us into postures of sincere prayer or we find relief from our discomfort, this comes at the cost of ignoring the Lord’s messenger.
Fear is the opposite of faith and takes us away from the Lord’s will. Lady Wisdom warns if we continue to ignore her, calamity is near.
We are creatures of habit and often do things without knowing why. In Christ, we have an enemy who seeks to thwart the Lord’s wish for us, and he uses our ignorance. We can get away with lying to ourselves. We even get away with lying to others. But, Lady Wisdom sees exactly what is going on! We are fools in her eyes when we are not watchful for her!
We should be watchful for Lady Wisdom. Let us recognize the reproofs of life. In this way, she becomes our dearest friend who will always tell us the truth. The truth that sets us free!
